South Yorkshire Police is the thirteenth largest of the 44 police forces within England, Wales and Northern Ireland, policing the towns of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and the city of Sheffield covering 600 square miles.
South Yorkshire was founded with mining and steel industries. It has an economically and culturally perse population covering 1,552 km2, and 57,120 households over four metropolitan boroughs- Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. Of a population of 1.35 million, (16% increase from 2012-14), 9.37% are ethnic minority, with over 83 languages spoken.
Sheffield has two universities which enrol approximately 40,000 students, including 7,500 international students each year. A recent report estimated that international students contribute £120m to Sheffield’s economy per annum.
South Yorkshire has five teaching hospitals, which includes a children’s hospital, and a national centre of trauma excellence. South Yorkshire also has one of the country’s largest retail parks, with a footfall of 30 million per annum, five football grounds and four prisons, which increases the transient population periodically.
